What happens when we’re finished with it?

We talk a lot about how clothes are made. We think it’s just as important to consider what happens after we’re done wearing them.

Polyester and other synthetic fibres are essentially plastics. They can persist in the environment for a very long time and may shed microplastics as they’re worn and washed.

Natural, plant-based fibres such as linen, organic cotton and hemp have a different end-of-life story. When they’re kept free from synthetic blends and certain treatments, they have the potential to break down naturally over time rather than remaining as plastic waste.

It’s not a perfect system — no new clothing comes without an environmental cost — but choosing better fibres, wearing them for longer, repairing, rehoming and eventually allowing materials to return to the earth feels like a better place to start.
